On the Old Market Square in Dresden, next to the Church of the Holy Cross, stands the monumental Art Nouveau building of the New Town Hall (Neue Rathaus).

A bit of history

At the end of the XIX century. The old town hall no longer had enough space for the city administration. Then it was decided to expand it. In the early 1900s, a competition was organized for the best architectural project. The victory was won by Carl Roth. The New Town Hall was built in 1905-1910. In wartime, the building suffered from numerous bombings, but it was reconstructed.

The entrance to the building is decorated with four gilded bars that protect the sculptures of lions. The town hall tower is made in the Baroque style, its height is 100 m. The tower is decorated with 16 figures of virtues. At the top - a 5-meter gilded sculpture of Heracles with the Cornucopia - the patron saint of Dresden. This work was performed by Richard Gur, and the famous German weightlifter Ewald Redam posed.

In clear weather, if you go up to the observation deck of the town hall, you can admire the beautiful view of the city and the neighboring villages stretching to Saxon Switzerland.

Wine Vault

The town hall houses a wine cellar. At the entrance to it you are met by the composition "Bacchus on a drunken donkey." Its author was the famous Dresden sculptor Georg Vrba. There is a long tradition. You need to stroke the thumb of the God of Winemaking, and this will bring you good luck and happiness. Therefore, tourists are happy to polish this part of the statue.

How to get there

Take tram 8, 9, 11, 12 to the Prager Straße stop.

How do I save on hotels?

Everything is very simple - look not only at the booking. I prefer the search engine RoomGuru. He is looking for discounts at the same time on Booking and on 70 other booking sites.

Everyone can learn Italian: an interview with a tutor

Almost a year soon, my desire to learn Italian brought me to Vika, a language tutor on Skype. This acquaintance prompted the idea to write a review about her on BlogoItaliano, and later Vika repeatedly said that students used this review to contact her. With many of them, she took her first steps in learning Italian, and with some - like me - she became good friends.

Medici or Medici: who controlled the throne?

For several consecutive years, in mid-October, I have been leaving for a week in one of the European cities to relax and see how they live there. Brussels turned out to be a charming, fragrant chocolate and beer-foamy French-speaking city. From the words "bonjour" and "arevoir" sometimes dizzy, and in the throat began to tickle from the gressed French "r".

Does it happen to you that having barely met a person, it seems to you that you have known each other for a thousand years? This happens to me extremely infrequently, but recently it happened. A rare human charm, a complete lack of pathos and mutual love for Italy ... I guess I could write about my beloved girl like that, but in fact Vika is our Italian teacher :).

We speak Italian since childhood

When I first arrived in Italy, I was sitting in one of the cozy cafes on the Rimini promenade and did not know how to ask for a cup of coffee. The slender brunette waitress looked at me piercingly for a long time, smiled, and then came up and asked "caffè"? Yes, I really wanted coffee! Burning, fragrant, a little bit bitter and leaving a pleasant aftertaste.
